Cubism – the modernism direction, made an attempt to model by means of art creativity the specific theory of knowledge consolidated of a presumption of anti-psychologism. Classical representatives of cubism in painting are P. Picasso, F. Lezhe, J. Gris, R. Delone (during the certain period of the creativity) and others. Thus, it is impossible to deny their revolutionary role: their moral position has brought today brilliant rehabilitation, in much bigger degree, than their art merits” (R. Lebel). Prevailing emotional tonality of cubism became sharp and sharply catastrophic experience of a boundary of 19-20 centuries, connected with domination of what has been designated as “mechanical forces of a civilization”: the subject world has opened to the world of the person the new person, having put under doubt the former version of its human understanding, having destroyed habitual ontologism of traditional knowledge. Owing to reflective judgment of this context Cubism is one of their most philosophically articulated directions of development of a modernist aesthetics, – already in the manifesto “About a cubism” (1912) it was fixed that the picture as that is some kind of a picture (concept) of the world. On the contrary, the format square or such in which the height prevails over width a little, as though stops at once dynamics of action and gives to composition a character of solemn representation – this kind of a format preferred for the altar pictures of the master of the High Renaissance (“the Sistine Madonna”). In turn, at significant prevalence of height over width, the composition again acquires dynamics, strong draught, but this time upwards or downwards; such narrow format was especially to liking to aristocratic, decorative artists or artists, who were adjusted mystically (mannerists, Greco), aspiring to embody certain emotions, moods.

It is characteristic that a square and tondo represent the most rare, most exclusive kinds of a format, only very much few periods and the directions inclined in this or that form to classical tendencies, cultivated these kinds of a format willingly. During the Renaissance epoch, for example, the round format can be met almost only in Florence and in Rome whereas the Venetian painters concerned it as negatively, as well as a square. Let’s speak about technics elements, at first.

The pencil leaves on a paper a thin line and it is impossible to cover the big area at once. Sometimes these not complete parts of drawing have huge psychological influence on the artist; therefore I recommend to divide work into fragments and to make them consistently. Such approach justifies itself, as I perceive each part of drawing simply as a combination of light, average and dark values. Here is necessary certain practice. Eyes should learn to see object not only as a subject, but also as set of different color stains. To your surprise, such method will remove a lot of problems, especially in the beginning work, and difficult work at any difficult drawing will give huge pleasure.

I do not use a white pencil for light or white places: it will give effect of grayish, pale shades, and I need accurate contrast of light and dark casts. And I simply leave untouched paper whiteness.

After allocation of these stains, I start to put color layers, developing scale from light to the dark. I pass one color on another until I will achieve a necessary shade. It is a unique way of mixing of paints in the technician of a color pencil (without use of solvents).

In the nature there are few of one-color objects. I don’t use only one pencil for the decision of a concrete color stain: each place represents a combination of paints of two or more colors.

Even if your “object” has absolutely black color — try to find characteristic texture-tonal drawing and to define light and dark stains. Then you should choose paints, which are harmoniously combined and are close to each place of color. I have established a rule for myself: always to mix a paint of primary color with paints, at least, of two other pencils. Only after that it is possible to consider developed tone. At the given approach search of the most true and correct shades raises special visual interest. Creating in drawing expressive effects, sometimes it is necessary to use about 50 various pencils.

It is impossible to avoid underpainting on difficult places.

Finishing the given stage, it is possible to begin laborious work on nuances of a light-to-dark modelling, observing sequence from light to the dark. Changing pencil pressing, create a wide range of values, avoiding effect of “polishing” of a surface at which paints of light shades with effort are put on dark so that wax binding of a pencil is softened and forms luster.

Final strokes.

Having felt that I am close to finishing stages of work, I remove sheet on one and a half – two metre and I analyze its coloristic decision, contrast and properties of values from various sides and points of view. I bring changes and additions. Then, if I will consider necessary, I delete all casual traces and stains, and also errors with eraser. All work from beginning to end occupies from 15 till 30 hours.

Try elements of my technique of drawing in color pencils, irrespective of character of the chosen object. There is a unique way to penetration into secrets of this – it is attentive research, experiments with pencil pressing, ways of drawing of paint layers and a variety of a paper. Recently I have opened a color pencil for myself. I suggest to you also to get accustomed to this material more attentively.

Working with small children, I offered them cooler pencils for the first acquaintance with color. Then, very soon, passed to development of more serious materials – a watercolor and gouache. Also I was always confident that color pencils – is frivolous, insignificant and superficial technics…

Now, after my experiments with a color pencil, I should recognize that there are no insignificant materials and the technician in the fine arts in general!

So, what was found out at work with color pencils?

Specific features:

1. The color pencil does not maintain very big sizes of a format.

2. Possesses a color transparency.

3. Complexity and a color subtlety are reached by imposing of several colors.

4. Inherently, it nevertheless the drawing material and consequently, of course, it is necessary experience to draw by a regular pencil.

The elementary sketch.

The color pencil is erased with rubber very bad, therefore at first I do preliminary sketches on some simple paper and I bring editing, without being afraid to damage a surface. Primary drawing I make with a regular pencil, at first planning the basic forms, then defining borders of a light and shade. It allows not putting color on the places, which have been not intended for a covering.

If I accept result, I move the sketch on a paper for the main work. Remember that at this stage drawing does not require to be in details, the field of vision will be inevitably left by set of details: therefore postpone details to a work stage in color.

If you only start to master color pencils, choose a paper the most unpretentious and simple in use, and, except that, capable “to sustain loading” of corrections of errors. For example, the firm pencil is badly put down on a rough paper, and soft easily crumbles and breaks about a relief of a paper with well expressed texture. Therefore, it is better to use a qualitative paper with average texture indexes to practice and get acquainted with all nuances of technics of a color pencil. Naturally, it is necessary to experiment with a various paper.

My favorite kind of paper is “wipe paper”; its velvety surface will give to a pencil warm, gentle disposition. But as the paper relief can keep considerable volume of color, I can control the rich, saturated stains of color.

Irrespective of ability of a paper to “forgive” to the artist discrepancy and mistakes, it is not necessary to overload it with color. At an initial stage of studying do not put on a basis pigment dense layers. The problem consists in learning gradually, and strictly supervising, to build color.

In spite of the fact that a little updating is possible with the help of eraser, for example, for softening of separate places, the pencil pigment will be inevitably smeared on a paper if it has been put with a dense or deep layer. Draw easy lines to exclude necessity of correction of a dense layer of a pigment. Then you can improve work with new paint layers for a long time.

Every brush consists of three basic parts: a hair bunch, a metal holder and the wooden handle.

Metal clamp. Metal clamps of qualitative brushes are seamless, made of seamless copper or a brass and can be covered by chrome or nickel. The brush clamp should be densely filled with hairs and strongly cover the handle on a circle. The hair bunch is glued to the handle and gives to brush bigger durability, but the gluing structure should not reach the top end of a clamp. It leads to necessity to use longer hairs that the brush at work could be turned on desirable degree.

The handle. High quality handles can be made only of firm wood of deciduous trees, such, as a beech, an oak, and a birch. The handle and a metal clamp are pressed with each other for better durability.

Hair bunch. The hair bunch, actually working part of a brush, is natural or synthetic hair of different shape and size. It is impossible to find universal brush, each brush has own mission. Brushes of natural hair are good for work with liquid paints, as main criteria here – control over fluidity of paint, ability of a brush to form a thin tip and elasticity of a hair bunch. The soft structure of natural hair and its natural form as well as possible meet these requirements.

Kolinsky is the best hair for a brush; it has gold-brown coloring, with sharp, as a needle, tip. It holds paint very well; its soft structure, the conic form and return make its ideal for all liquid paints and a portrayal of details. Besides the bunch of kolinsky brushes consists of hairs of different length, which at contact of the filled brush with a surface, create a capillary stream – continuous, with an excellent consistence.

Least weasel is an alternative to kolinsky hair. Hairs of red-brown color, with the good sharp tip, of quite good filling, but not such long, as at a kolinsky hair.

Hair of the squirrel is very thin, of blue, black or brown color. The tip of a brush from the squirrel hair reminds a rapier edge, under the control over fluidity does not concede a kolinsky hair, but it is not so elastic by the nature.

Easy bull hair. Brushes from the bull hair also are good for liquid paints at the expense of softness and elasticity though haven’t such sharp conic form, as kolinsky or squirrel hair. Brushes for pastose paints are estimated only on one parameter: the denser is paint the hair should be firmer. Brushes from a bristle hair are considered as the most suitable. Slightly diluted paints require softer hair.

Badger hair has the conic form and a dense top part, closer to the hair end, but near hair root it is rather thin, therefore a brush is very fluffy. It is considered ideal at work with moderately diluted oil paints. The best badger brushes have a tip of white color and a dark strip in the middle.

Pig bristle – elastic and strong, from it can be made the best brushes for oil and acrylic. The major characteristic of a bristle is its split tip – it promotes good fullness of a brush and equal drawing of paint on a basis surface.

Synthetic brushes are not similar with each other and behave differently. Nylon brushes are not good for work with a watercolor, but are good for moderately diluted acrylic as possess the necessary durability and elasticity. Synthetic hair on the basis of polyesters possesses various degree of elasticity. It can be collected in bunches of various diameters for creation of capillary action between fibres, with what is reached the good control over fluidity.
